Centers, Networks, Projects and People: The Expanding Ecosystem of Informal (and formal) STEM Education
Jamie Bell, Project Director & Principal Investigator, CAISE

Jamie Bell will present an overview of the Center for the Advancement of Informal Science Education (CAISE) and informalscience.org, an online community and collection of informal STEM learning projects, evaluation, and research resources. He will characterize the current state of Informal Science Education (ISE) Networks, describe CAISE’s role in convening ISE Networks, and invite discussion about further directions for and research on ISE Networks.

About the Speaker

Jamie Bell began his career in informal science education as a field trip guide at the Exploratorium before becoming co-director of the museum's High School Explainer Program, from 1987-1995. After completing an Ed.M. at Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1996 he returned to the Exploratorium to manage the completion of Facilitating the Framework, an exhibit and program development project based on California state science standards, and the conception and development of two exhibition projects- Achieving Active, Prolonged Engagement with Interactive Science Museum Exhibits and Listening: Making Sense of Sound. Jamie has also worked as a consultant in the Boston area as the content developer for the Essential Science for Teachers: Physical Science professional development video series for the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Science Media Group and for the Math Momentum in Science Centers project at TERC. In 2006 Jamie was invited to Malaysia to develop and establish a “Centre of Learning” department at Petrosains: The Discovery Centre in Kuala Lumpur. After 3 years in Malaysia, Jamie returned to the US to spend a year as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Pittsburgh Center for Learning in Out of School Environments. In 2010, he accepted his current position as the Project Director and Principal Investigator of the Center for the Advancement of Informal Science Education (CAISE) at the Association of Science and Technology Centers in Washington D.C.
