Energize New Mexico/ Making Sense of SCIENCE
Teacher Professional Development Institute
Farmington, NM
June 8-12, 2015
Presented by the New Mexico Informal Science Education Network (NM ISE Net) and NM EPSCoR, with support from NM Museum of Natural History and Science, Explora, National Museum of Nuclear Science and History, Farmington Museum, and Bradbury Science Museum.
What:
A comprehensive professional development course for teachers that provides all the necessary ingredients for building a scientific way of thinking in teachers and students, focusing on science content, inquiry, and literacy. Teachers will
- Learn major energy concepts
- Examine how children make sense of those concepts
- Analyze and improve their teaching practice
- Learn ways to support science learning through literacy
- Learn about energy research in New Mexico

Where:
The Institute will be held in Farmington at the Farmington Museum.
When:
June 8th-12th, 9:00 am-4:00 pm daily PLUS September 12 and October 3.
Application deadline is April 13, 2015!
Who:
Upper elementary and middle school (4th -8th grade) teachers from northwest New Mexico who teach science are eligible to attend. Priority will be given to teachers applying as a team of two or more teachers from the same school.
Stipend:
Teachers will receive a stipend of $625 for the week, plus an additional $250 stipend for their participation in follow-up workshops.

To Apply:
- Identify your school team of at least two teachers, write a statement of purpose, and ask your principal to write a letter of support.
- Fill out an online application and attach supporting documents—statement of purpose and principal’s letter of support. Principal’s letter of support may be faxed to 505-246-6007, attn. Selena Connealy or emailed to connealy@epscor.unm.edu
Personal Statement – Your statement of purpose should be a maximum of one page (one application, one statement for the entire team) and should answer the following questions:
- How will your school benefit by attending this institute? Please address teacher capacity and student outcomes.
- In what way are you already teaching about Energy at your school?
- How will you work as a team to implement what you have learned in this Institute? After completion of the Institute, how do you intend to share what you learned with others?
Principal’s Letter of Support – Should include a statement indicating
- Support of your team’s participation in this week-long Institute and follow-up workshops.
- Support of your implementation and sharing of knowledge and skills.
