I am working in the Bioalgal Energy Development lab with Omar Holguin, Sa'rae, Stephanie and Saba. I plan to grow three different strains of algae: Haematococcus, DOE 0202, and Coelastrella. Once these are healthy and dense, I will take samples of each culture and stress them, hoping for a pigment change along with an increase in the carotenoids that they naturally produce. I will take analysis on the final (stressed) algae samples. After the analysis is finished, I will be able to compare which algae sample produces a specific carotenoid. Lastly, I will research the carotenoids produced and the health benefits they offer.
