GeoTime

Summary:

GeoTime is a multi-platform (Microsoft Windows and Mac OSX) geospatial analysis software that allows the visual analysis of events over time. It has developed a visualization technique that improves perception of movements, events, and relationships as they change over time within a spatial context. A combined temporal-spatial space was constructed in which to show interconnecting streams of events over a range of time in a single image.

Because of the addition of time as the third dimension to a traditional two-dimensional map, GeoTime allows users to detect changes over time. Users can view real-time animated playback of data and use built-in tools to identify location patterns, connection between events, and trends. GeoTime can import data in many formats, such as GPX, Shapefiles, and CSV. It can also import data from live data sources, such as GeoRSS, RSS, and WMS, and even from telecommunication carrier reports formats. These features give the users the ability to aggregate data from satellites, mobile phones, social networking web sites, web server logs, and many other geospatial data sources. GeoTime can export data to other GIS programs via KML and CSV format, as well as capture video of animations.

ArcGIS and Microsoft Excel extensions are available, allowing GeoTime to work seamlessly with the popular program of ArcGIS and Excel. However, lawyers and privacy campaigners have questioned whether innocent individuals may be tracked by the software.

Capabilities/Features:

GeoTime adds time as the third dimension to a two-dimensional map, allowing users to observe changes within time series data. Users can view real-time animated playback of data and use automated analysis tools within the software to identify location patterns, connections between events, and trends. Users can observe patterns of behavior not previously possible and enables time to interactively gain insight into many thousands of events and transactions. GeoTime analysis techniques are unique and have been patented.

Extensions:

The GeoTime is a visual analysis application that not many extensions have been developed by Oculus Info Inc., users, and third-parties. An ArcGIS extension is available that allows GeoTime to work alongside the popular ArcGIS with bi-directional data sharing between the two programs. GeoTime supports a simple transfer wizard from ArcGIS, which allows for easy loading of data. A Microsoft Excel extension is also available to facilitate the data visualization in Excel environment. This Excel extension offers fast and flexible data mapping wizard and can support large data sets.

Discipline/Domain:

Geographic information science, widely used in visual analysis and reporting of location data over time. Links to information about GeoTime’s product use in many domains is available from GeoTime’s “Customer Stories” webpage.
