Global Mapper is a GIS software package developed by Blue Marble Geographics that runs on Microsoft Windows at an affordable price (single unit licensing is less than $500). It competes with ESRI ArcGIS, GeoMedia, Manifold System, and MapInfo GIS products. It has a set of applications that provides complementary capabilities to support the entire geospatial data workflow.

GeoTime is a multi-platform (Microsoft Windows and Mac OSX) geospatial analysis software that allows the visual analysis of events over time. It has developed a visualization technique that improves perception of movements, events, and relationships as they change over time within a spatial context. A combined temporal-spatial space was constructed in which to show interconnecting streams of events over a range of time in a single image.

Geomajas is an enterprise-ready free and open source cross-platform (Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX) GIS framework for the web. It has been written in Java and building on the Spring Framework, JTS Topology Suite, GeoTools, Hibernate Spatial, and GWT. Geomajas was originally named geGIS (2007), then MAJAS and later Geomajas.

The Spatial-Time Analysis of Regional Systems (STARS) is a free and open source cross-platform (Microsoft Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux) geographic information system software package designed for the analysis of areal data measured over time. It has been developed by Regional Analysis Laboratory (REGAL), which is a collaborative research group within the Department of Geography, San Diego State University. STARS package has been implemented using the Python scripting language which makes it easy to install, easy to use, and easy to enhance and expand.

The DIVA-GIS platform is a free and open source cross-platform (Microsoft Windows and Mac OSX) geographic information system software package. It was specifically developed for use with biological distribution data by International Potato Center (CIP) in collaboration with the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI), and with support from the System-wide Genetic Resources Program (SGRP). It is widely used in biological field to map and analyze biodiversity data.

AGIS is a mapping and simple GIS package specifically designed to be easy to use, and distributed as shareware via the world wide web. Maps and data can be provided by the user in the form of text files either created by other programs, or typed using a text editor. All control files used by AGIS are ASCII text, so it is easier to create such files using other systems.

Capaware is free and open source cross-platform 3D geographic information system software. It is a free software project that was co-developed by the University of Las Palmas (Spain) and Canary Islands Technological Institute (Spain). In 2007, the first version of Capaware was released by the Government of Canary Islands, Spain, for the purpose of promoting the development of free software.

ER Mapper is a Microsoft Windows operating system-based powerful remote sensing software package, capable of performing many complicated tasks. The traditional strengths of ER Mapper lie in the ease with which you can process aerial photos and satellite images. It has advanced image processing and compression capabilities geared toward the oil and gas, and mineral exploration industries.

FalconView is a free and open source mapping system created by the Georgia Tech Research Institute for the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems. It supports the display of aeronautical charts, satellite images, and elevation maps. It also supports a large number of overlay types that can be displayed over any map background. In addition, it supports many raster and vector data formats. Moving map is also supported if users have a connected GPS unit. The sky view mode allows users to fly through terrain with overlays by keyboard or joystick control.

The Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) are an free and open source cross-platform (Microsoft Windows, Mac OSX, and Unix) software package designed for the analysis and display of geoscience data, helping scientist to analyze, interpolate, filter, manipulate, project, and plot time series and gridded datasets. GMT is developed and maintained by Paul Wessel, Walter H.F. Smith, Remko Scharroo, Joaquim Luis, and Florain Wobbe, with help from a global set of volunteers, and is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
