AGIS is a mapping and simple GIS package specifically designed to be easy to use, and distributed as shareware via the world wide web. Maps and data can be provided by the user in the form of text files either created by other programs, or typed using a text editor. All control files used by AGIS are ASCII text, so it is easier to create such files using other systems.
The AGIS program has sufficient built-in control dialogue to facilitate users to create and edit all control information without understanding the structure of the files being used. It can produced high quality and high spatial resolution maps and images that can be copied to clipboard and pasted into any word editing packages. Users can even save the maps and images to the hard disk.
A multi-document interface allows the concurrent display of a number of individual maps, each composed of a number of maps and data layers. A built-in scripting language can be used to create animation, automate maps displays using data from other sources such as Access database, and serve images to interactive map displays on webpages. Users also have access to many datasets for free.
AGIS is developed exclusively for the Microsoft Windows operating system. The only place that files are added to users’ systems during installation is the AGIS software directory. No changes or additions are made to files anywhere. However, no geospatial analysis tools are provided and only a number of map projects are supported, which may lead to inappropriate display of the geospatial data.
AGIS is a mapping and simple GIS shareware package. Users can plot their own geographic data on the map of the world provided without the high cost and steep learning curve usually associated with this kind of software. AGIS can create high spatial resolution maps which can be easily pasted into Microsoft Office. In addition, animation, web serving, distance measuring, searching; GPS, and integration with other systems such as databases are also supported.
The AGIS is a low range GIS application package which does not provide programming components that support the development of desktop and mobile applications. However, AGIS has a built-in scripting language allows users to create map animation and to link AGIS to other applications such as database queries. The combination of scripting and saving map in a number of raster formats provide users the ability to create low cost vector-based map serving to their own web pages (map serving capability).
Geographic information visualization and mapping application, widely used in various disciplines. Links to information about AGIS’s use in many domains is available from AGIS Software’s “Application” page.
